A Casual conversation…

Driven To Succeed — This was the theme of the men’s conference in North Dakota this past weekend. I was on the plane destined for my connection in Minneapolis. While quietly praying and formulating my final thoughts in anticipation of a cold weekend, my opening illustration of the event was sitting next to me.

The casual conversation with what appeared to be a successful businessman finally led to the common question, “What do you do for a living?” My reply of “minister” often leads to the close of that conversation. Not so this time.

I was amazed as these two seats seemed to transform into a confessional booth as this seemingly shy person began voluntarily admitting his shortcomings as a husband and father to four girls, ages eight and under. Five weeks of successful business trips were contributing to feelings of failure in what really mattered…his family. And then he said it better than this preacher could, “It seems that the more successful I become, the further away from God I get.”

He said it his way. The preacher in me says it this way. The figures on a paycheck, the title on the door, and the top of the corporate ladder do not add up to success. The man driven to succeed must be driven to his knees and the pages of God’s Word if he hopes to be a true success.
